This Zkittlez Auto grow journey, affectionately named Skyler, faced its share of challenges from germination through flowering. Despite early signs of nutrient deficiencies and even a hermaphroditic banana, the grower diligently managed the plant's needs, adjusting nutrients and pH while closely monitoring for any further issues. The plant persevered, developing frosty buds with a delightful citrus and fruity aroma, hinting at its namesake. Ultimately, Skyler was harvested after a 10-week cycle, yielding a quality product with a potent effect and a complex flavor profile, proving that resilience and careful attention can lead to a rewarding harvest even through a difficult grow.

Day 89 - Nov 23, 2020
Drying Week 1
Drying stage started!
Tree Logs
Note
While this grow was challenging from the start, I got a final product and the end product is very good. Perhaps best smelling and tasting weed I've had and all issues considered the grow turned out better than expected. I learned some new techniques and had an ok yield that averaged ~33g/plant (had a high yielding plant a low yielding and a medium yielding) for a 10 week grow cycle. This strain is aptly named. When ground up, smells strongly of fruits with undertones of typical high quality cannabis skunky gas smells, tastes like quality weed, at times with hints of fruits also and leaves a nicer aftertaste than normal weed does. May grow another breeders zkittlez in the future or maybe even fastbuds again.
Note
Final yields:100g buds, 6 mL RSO for infusion into edibles

Day 81 - Nov 15, 2020
Flowering Week 8
Tree Logs
Note
Burped early am. Jars remained in the cure zone over night and shortly after burping rebounded to 59% rh. Testing some nugs, 6 days of cure. Amazing smell when broken up, not there yet when smelling the nug though. When broken up, perhaps the best smelling weed I've smelled with only 6 days cure. The body of smoke is not the smoothest but this will get better with more cure time. there are occasional hints of berry flavors in the smoke. Potent with a nice high. A high quality product, and am excited to see more character brought out by longer cure time.

Will be checking with the loupe every watering now to watch trichome development. This is day 60 of this grow with breeder and diaries suggesting 60-80 days for this strain so harvest will be coming soon. Watering, pictures, trichome update if noted in the next day or two

Note
A note on Jane: The most vigorous plant (Jane) has had many leaves look damaged that were different in presentation than initial issues, and I believe they are likely to be caused by light burn. The plant was about twice as tall as her sisters, and so I set up my tent to have my old blurple above the top of Jane and the SF at about 14 inches over the tops of the short plant. This places the upper middle branches of Jane to be under the SF at not very many inches below the light while the top of Jane goes over the SF. I rotate her daily so those middle branches get equal exposure to the strong light of the SF. Noticed symptoms but didnt think much of it since the whole grow has given me problems but the more I thought about the symptom presentation and as I look into it and think the more likely I believe it is indeed light burn. No buds have been bleached. Next grow I am going do better with placing the lights to ensure the light is distributed more evenly across all 3 plants

Note
Today is 7 weeks from sprout. Defoliated some of the sickliest leaves. Examined plants closely today, no signs of more nanners. Buds fattening up by the day seemingly. More pistils reddening and receding but still 50/50 at most and likely more white pistils. Checked trichomes under the loupe for the first time, revealing mainly cloudy trichomes with some clear trichomes and even saw one or two ambers. While I've had various problems since sprout this whole grow, looking like I'll have a harvest unless something goes horribly wrong these final weeks, and theres still potential to have a good yielding harvest if they continue to put on size like they have. Breeder estimates being done 70-80 days, currently 52 days in. Pictures and watering tomorrow.

Growth continues. Searched for more nanners and couldn't find any. While doing this, lightly grabbed some buds and the smell was deliciously citrusy and other fruits with hints of the typical skunkish smell from cannabis, IMO making Zkittlez a fitting name for the strain while growing. Hope it translates to the jar and smoking experience. Removed a few more sickly leaves. I think the issues may be getting better, at a minimum they are progressing slower. Ideally I wasn't too late. Buds are for sure sizing up now, with roughly 3-4 weeks or so until harvest.

Growth continues. Today is 6 weeks from sprout. I have done all I know to do and leaves continue to show deficiencies in spite of high ppms and a proper pH and showing light tip burn. Do not believe they are toxicities. Buds are starting to put on size with the smaller two showing lots of frost already. Some pistils are reddening. Unfortunately, found one hermaphroditic banana on Skyler. Plucked with tweezers. Will check her closely daily for more, and if she throws out a lot she will be harvested early. Will be examining the other plants closely too, through research online and conversations with growing friends I am suspecting fastbudz doesnt have very good genetics. A growing friend has also had issues like mine and nanners with their fastbudz grows. Watering and more pictures tomorrow.

Watering considerations: All plants ppm increased. All have shown symptoms of what I believe to be various deficiencies by now in spite of ppm that suggests they are well fed. Based off these ppms I would be likely to plain water next but these plants seem to have been very hungry, and while ppms are high I will monitor plants to decide on if next watering will also be a fertilization. Phs differentials suggest lockout should be fixed or close to.

Note
Growth continues. The nutrient burn on some leaves tips hasn't spread much and no new noted symptoms of toxicities. As I was concerned plants were showing deficiencies due to pH lockout preventing nutrient absorption and are now showing they may have had too many nutrients but not enough to give extreme toxicities, currently interpreting this as a good sign.

Note
After lights on, growth continues. Set up the old blurple over Jane, and separated the plants so Francesca and Skyler are focused directly under the sf2000 at closer distance than was allowed due to Jane's height while still allowing the sf to likely hit some of the lowers of Jane. Noticed some potentially excess N induced leaf clawing and what looks to be slight nutrient burn on all 3. While this suggests the lockout is fixed, will continue to monitor plants closely as they dry out from the flush and respond to the extra light

Flush info: gave each plant 4L straight tap water, then 4L phed water, then 4L nutrient water. For Skyler and Jane, I pHed the fertilizer water up to the low 7s based off the differential from the pH watering and runoff. Messed this up for Francesca, but it came out at 6. The final differentials are in a separate log, and I think for all besides Francesca they suggest the pH is in a good place. Going forward, I am going to track and use the differentials to make a more informed decision on what to pH the water going in at. Will observe plants as they dry out but hoping this solved the problems. Jane and Skyler were showing symptoms, and Francesca appears ok but her growth pattern and leaves look odd. Unless burn or toxicities appear, next watering will probably be a light fertilization; I suspect these are heavy feeding plants

Skyler, week 5 height and runoff after flush
Note
Today is 5 weeks from sprout. Jane is a very vigorous plant and I am looking forward to watching her fill out. The other two, not so much but I'll hold out hope. All look so different I can easily ID them from appearance; my first grow was much more difficult to tell the individuals apart. Pistils popping more, and plants are still stretching as expected. Noticing trichomes already. Later, adding in the old light, going to flush all plants to get runoff to a more appropriate pH, and give them a fairly strong dose of nutrients in a final 4L volume once the pH is better. Since two of the plants dont look the best and the one that is vigorous is showing symptoms like the most affected one that then turned into overall symptoms of deficiency, I wonder if I've had pH problems this whole grow from the soil itself or pHing the water messed with the pH balance of the soil. I did more research, better late than never I suppose, and I likely should have been alerted earlier by the very low runoff pH. On the next run I am going to try watering the soil to runoff and make sure pH is reasonable via that or slurry and leave it fairly wet before planting. I have read this technique (besides the pH part, doing that precautionary) is actually decent for seedlings as long as you use fabric pots and let's them have plenty of water and then will be ready for normal waterings by the time it dries out. This methodology makes sense to me, hope it's not one of those things that makes sense on paper but not so much in practice. Will look more into it before next run, of course.

Note
Growth continues. Skyler is again presenting with the previous deficiency on the new growth. For sure flushing until runoff gets to 6-6.5 and she will be given full dose cal mag, 25%grow big and 25% big bloom once the pH stabilizes. Still deciding on whether or not to flush the other two as well. Also, I am thinking about introducing the blurple from the last grow into the tent. The plan would be to focus the blurple above Jane, and then move her sisters away and focus them under the SF should temp not be an issue.
Day 35 - Sep 30, 2020
Flowering Week 1
Tree Logs
Note
After lights on, mainly healthy growth continues. Starting to notice more than one leaf on Jane with skylers issue, though it's just one more. Very slight appearance of more issues on skylers new leaves though very slowly. Discontinuing LST. Removed about 7 fan leaves total across Francesca, Skyler, and jane. skylers were fairly sickly ones and while Francesca and janes werent, all were blocking bud sites. Francesca and Jane received 3L 0.8 mL/L grow big and 0.5 mL/L calimagic fertilizer water. Water going in 450 ppm 6.7 pH. Francesca runoff 5.9 pH 1400 ppm. Jane runoff 5.6 pH 1300 ppm.
Note
Watering considerations: again low pH in the runoff, though not really seeing much bad on the plants yet. If plants respond well, planning on next watering of Jane and Francesca to be 4L of water straight from the tap, and switching to flower nutes next fertilization. Will likely give Skyler the same fertilization her sisters received today when shes ready.
Note
Photo info: the white background is a Calcium deficient leaf and the other is a leaf that's been defoliated from my plant and was fairly progressed. I'm more confident in my diagnosis of calcium deficiency, but I think it was compounded by pH lockout as it has progressed in spite of repeated calmag fertilizations, albeit a bit more slower. While I flushed, I used pH 7 and it only got up to like 6 in the runoff. The issue is still ongoing and progressing so I suspect I didnt bring the pH up enough. As Jane is showing minor symptoms too, I think next watering I will flush all plants with straight tap water. I will use about a gallon at a time and the pH out of the tap is a bit over 8. I will test runoffs until it gets to the mid 6 range.

Before lights off, plants seem well after yeterdays watering. Though its only been 15 hours since watering, I expected Skyler to show symptoms of overwatering due to the flush. However, like her sister, her leaves seemed extra perky. I want to say skylers leaves in particular look better than they did before the flush in their perkiness, which is interesting since her soil and pot weight suggested waiting to water. Hope this is a sign of progress and good things to come!

Note
Watering considerations:Hoping all plants respond well. Last grow I didnt bother pHing anything, checked with strips to make sure everything going in or out was 6-8 pH, and all was well; I'm wondering if, in my zeal to improve, the action of the water containing down has somehow interfered with soil pH balance although nothing going in has been out of range. As Skyler recieved a flush, I may have to individualize her care as it will probably take her longer to dry out. Will know more in a few days, and hopefully its reassuring!
Note
Plants sprouted 4 weeks ago today. They are in early flower and undergoing the stretch. Jane is a very vigorous plant and i am excited to see her fill out with buds. Skyler has potential as well, though im concerned with the issue shes had and am not yet sure if i have it fixed. Im particularly worried the issue might cause problems as they are going through the stretch and i assume a healthy stretch is important for final plant structure and thus bud structure. Francesca has hardly any side branch growth and not even my rookie LST seems to be encouraging side branches to grow out, though the other plants have been responding. This grow has definitely been more challenging than my first one. Im kind of dissapointed with these autos (except for jane) so far, but im probably only halfway through the grown cycle so I will hold on to hope and it is my first auto grow so maybe this is how they are and i shouldnt compare to my photoperiod first grow. Adjusted the light up a little. Adjusted LST on Jane, I am going to leave Francesca and Skyler to their own devices from here on out. All plants have so far received virtually identical watering but Skyler seems to be able to go another day while her sisters are pretty dry. This makes me concerned she is not drinking at the rates of her sisters, another potential problem. However, for Skyler, decided to do a pHed flush of ~3 gallons. Thus, she will receive 9L pHed To about 7 water, and then going to finish with the 3L indicated fertilized water that all plants will be getting.

Note
Before lights off, plants were checked and LST adjusted on all 3. Plants all seemed to take watering well, and Skylers issue seems to not have worsened yet. A soil slurry test was performed on Skyler, showing 5.7 pH and 400 ppm from both a far site and one right under the main stem of the plant. This is stronger evidence of pH lockout, and if the issue gets worse I will be doing a pHed flush for the next watering for Skyler. I find this odd as I havent given anything below 6.3 pH and most are closer to 6.5-7, and I think some straight from the tap slightly above 8. Nothing has made me think my pH meter is off and I carefully check it against the provided calibration solutions before each usage. I may redo the slurry and check pH with strips I used with last grow and make sure they are as consistent with the meter as possible.

Flowering Week 1
Flowering stage started!
Tree Logs
Note
I am marking today as the first day of flower; this gave me 26 days from sprout of vegetative growth. After some reading, I believe the issue on Skyler to be a calcium deficiency. Plants received ~2L of indicated fertilizer water. Water going in 440 ppm 6.7 pH. Skyler runoff 5.4 pH 2500 ppm. Francesca runoff 5.7 pH 1350 ppm. Jane runoff 5.5 pH 1640 ppm. Cumulative runoff 2000 ppm 5.6 pH. Following the late night watering, it was noted Skyler's issue was spreading. The runoff was very high ppm and again very acidic; I am going to keep a close eye and am considering flushing her if the issue gets much worse as perhaps pH lockout is the issue. I'm still leaning towards a calcium deficiency as the spreading condition presents the same way and nothing going in has been an unhealthy pH. LST was adjusted on Francesca and Jane.
Note
Watering considerations:PPMs didnt vary much out of what was expected except for skyler's, who continues to go up. This might lend credence to my theory of pH lockout causing her issues. Will continue to monitor her and may flush if the problem spikes following this fertilization. If all goes well, jumping up to volumes of 3L next watering and will be a plain pHed watering.

Note
Mainly healthy growth continues. Adjusted LST on Jane and Skyler, and LST'd Francesca. Tomorrow will be when I switch stages, they seem to be exploding with growth the past few days in a way that is reminiscent of my grow with photos after I changed the photo period and there are seemingly more pistils by the day. On some low leaves on Skyler, there may be an issue arising. The picture shows the worst leaf and it is only on a few. Will keep a close eye on this and look into causes. One of the plants appeared to have a few stems that were purple. Unless I discover the issue to be a toxicity, and because I think they are beginning flowering, next watering I am going to give 25%veg fertilizer and 50% calmag. As the water here typically comes out of the tap at less than 100 ppm I think supplementing some cal mag is a good idea plus the purple stems can be an indicator. The calmag has 1 0 0 for its NPK, and as I read Cannabis likes N until the stretch is done I am going to use 25% veg nutes as well. Want them to be fed for their stretch and will keep a close eye for toxicities following.

Plants received 2L of slightly pHed water. Water going in 140 ppm 7.0 pH. Francesca runoff 1200 ppm 5.8 pH. Skyler runoff 2500 ppm 5.4 pH. Jane runoff 2145 ppm 5.4 pH. Cumulative runoff 2000 ppm 6.5 pH. Slightly adjusted Jane's LST, and gave skyler some slight LST to hit some of the lower nodes as they are developing foliage. Francesca doesn't have much between each node yet so nothing yet for her. Will probably readjust Jane LST again tomorrow, got her straightened to get a feel to how she responded. Definitely asymmetrical growth from the foliage most exposed the light, as expected.

Note
Watering considerstions: Likely gonna stick with 2L next watering. Plants runoff pH were very low, and this is odd because except for one watering at like 6.3, every watering has been right around 7 or greater. However, so long as plants dont show pH lockout problems I will continue pHing the water to 6.5-7. PPMs are still running very high, unless theres a sharp drop in the runoff or plants starts to look hungry I doubt I will be fertilizing for another couple waterings. The plants sprouted 22 days ago, and I read the soil is good for about a month or so. Thus, around 30 days or so from sprout I will introduce fertilizer very slowly at that point and watch closely for toxicities if they have not yet begun showing deficiency when I feed them. For these autoflowers, that will be right around flowering stretch time according to what I've read, so I suspect they will enjoy the nutrients for their stretch.

Plants were checked after lights on. Took watering well. Healthy growth continues. Attempted LST, will just have to see how the plant responds. The light was adjusted to 15 inches above the plants.
Note
20 days from sprout update: Jane is easily the most vigorous plant and I have high hopes for her. Skyler, the plant that was off to a rough start, is doing very well now. She is a little behind Jane on leaf development and yet she is somehow only about half of Jane's height. Francesca is taller but her leaf development is lacking. I am for sure seeing preflowers for the first time today, though didnt look super close before. The plants are all developing very differently, adding a little challenge that was absent from my first grow as they were all very similar, except they had slightly (few inches) different heights from each other. Tried LST.

Tree Logs
Note
Watering considerations: While all plants received 2L, francesca had a much larger volume of runoff likely due to the staggered waterings I did. Next watering will likely be 2L again, and will increase if/when plants start drinking more. Runoff revealed very high and increased ppms and a low pH of 5.9. They have never received water that was very low pH or high ppm so this is likely from the soil mix itself. As it is high quality soil that worked great in the past this is not yet concerning. Will continue to use the same pHing recipe even though it's a little high and monitor plants while keeping track of changes in runoff. I do believe, however, these runoff readings were more representative of the soil conditions than previous readings.

I believe skyler is rebounding from her rough start; the new developing leaves look as they should and are appearing to be healthy. I have increased the amount of light they will be getting both by lowering the light and slightly increasing its power. Compared to my first grow, leaf development is fairly similar at two weeks in. I expect them to really take off on leaf development soon, as they've already began picking up the pace. Likely only 2 to 3 or so more weeks before the autoflowering begins.

Watering considerations: first time I phed this water and this is my second grow. It read at 6.2. Runoffs were 5.9-6.1 pH, so next watering I will likely not ph the water and see how the runoff changes, dont want it to be too acidic. Ppms remain fairly consistently high, no reason to consider fertilizing for likely a few weeks. I will continue to mist the plants leaves before lights off until the next watering.
Note

Plants were checked and received ~2L tap water between all 3 of them before lights off. If they respond well, switching to watering like this with leaf sprayings before lights off rather than watering with just the spray bottle as the soil dried. Jane's second set of true leaves is developing 3 bladed and healthily and as past experience and reading suggests this is the normal pattern. Francesca has the next true leaves growing and looking healthy but are not yet mature enough to see if they will develop into the typical 3 bladed second set of true leaves, though I suspect they will. Interestingly, Skyler had the troubled looking first true leaves and, faster than the others, started developing her next set. The second set of leaves has one noticeably larger than the other leaf while the others I've had symmetrically grow their new growth, and yet they are large enough I would expect them to show the additional blades like jane. Instead, they look like a second set of serrated first true leaves with a cotyledon ovalish shape rather than elongated and oblong. That said, there is development looking like the 3rd set of leaves starting on Skyler and none others. After lights on, plants seem mainly healthy.

Once the plants mature a bit, I'll be misting/spraying less and I will start using large volumes of water while trying get some runoff, then letting them dry out completely to encourage root development. At 2115, 27.25 hours after placing seeds on paper towels, all 3 had developed tap roots of appropriate length to be placed into their pots.
