Garlic Breath

Ever thought you'd find yourself longing for garlic breath? Neither did many other smokers until they tried this super pungent, skunky hybrid cannabis strain. Bred by a mysterious breeder responsible for other OGKB crosses like Peanut Butter Breath, Garlic Breath has won over the hearts and minds of recreational and medical cannabis users alike with its bold aromas, lingering flavors, and excellent high. Keep reading to learn all there is to know about the Garlic Breath cannabis strain, its history, origins, and effects.

History of the Garlic Breath Cannabis Strain

Garlic Breath is a hybrid cannabis strain bred by ThugPug Genetics. ThugPug, also known by his Instagram username Gromer1, is a very low-key breeder with a strong cult following among cannabis growers and geneticists. While his origin story isn't known, rumor has it that Gromer had been growing and breeding cannabis for several years, and also worked as a genetics tester for Gage Green Group before founding the ThugPug Genetics brand circa 2016.

ThugPug Genetics got a lot of love from growers and breeders once it launched, and was particularly popular for its unique line of OGKB crosses, including:

• Garlic Breath
• Peanut Butter Breath
• Meat Breath

Genetic Lineage of Garlic Breath

Garlic Breath is a hybrid cannabis strain that's rumored to be slightly indica dominant. There is some debate about its genetic origins, with some sources claiming that it stems from Chemdawg and Hogsbreath. However, it is generally agreed upon that Garlic Breath was bred from GMO (aka Garlic Cookies) and Mendo Breath. Below we'll take a look at both of these strains, their traits, and how they may have impacted Garlic Breath.

Garlic Breath's first parent, GMO (also known as Garlic Cookies or Garlic Mushroom & Onion) is a unique cross of GSC (aka Girl Scout Cookies) and Chemdawg. As its name suggests, GMO has an extremely funky aroma reminiscent of fried garlic, earthy mushrooms, and sauteed onions. Its flavor is uniquely savory with diesel overtones and strong garlic notes that tend to linger in your mouth long after exhaling. Meanwhile, GMO's effects deeply relax the body while sending the mind off into a euphoric, uplifted, social, and happy daze. While its funky aroma and flavor might not appeal to everyone, GMO has won over a loyal following of smokers who treasure the strain's unique smell and taste, as well as its balanced effects.

Garlic Breath's second parent is Mendo Breath. Bred from Mendo Montage and OGKB (rumored to be a unique GSC phenotype), Mendo Breath is slightly indica dominant and produces a relaxing, stress-free buzz treasured by many. Reminiscent of GSC and other Cookies varieties, Mendo Breath has a sweet aroma that combines notes of vanilla with hints of earthy caramel and a peppery kick. The creation of this now-famous strain is often credited to Gage Green Group, who have released multiple varieties of Mendo Breath in recent years, including F1, F2, and F3 versions. Smokers and medical patients report enjoying this strain for its strong buzz that relaxes the body while relieving mental tension.

Both GMO and Mendo Breath endowed Garlic Breath with dank, funky flavor notes and uplifting yet relaxing effects.

Physical Characteristics of Garlic Breath

Garlic Breath is a vigorous hybrid strain that develops broad, bright green leaves and strong branches/stems. It is a fairly tall variety that's known to stretch considerably in bloom, and can produce heavy harvests of long, dense flowers. Garlic Breath plants grow large, elongated colas packed with bright green flowers that take on a stunning silver sheen, thanks to their thick coating of trichomes. Garlic Breath flowers are chunky and sticky, with a solid structure, yet are still easy to break apart and roll into a joint or pack into a bowl.

Properties and Effects of Garlic Breath

Garlic Breath produces roughly 25% THC, making for a fairly potent strain. Its dense, resinous flowers also produce a lot of terpenes, including limonene, myrcene, and pinene (among others), which come together to give the strain a spicy aroma reminiscent of fried, musky garlic and skunk with refreshing lemon overtones. Its flavor is also very skunky, with some lemon notes on the exhale and a lingering, spicy garlic kick.

In terms of effects, Garlic Breath kicks in just minutes after your first toke. Experienced users may find this strain initially energetic and uplifting, leaving them in a happy state of mind and relaxed, though not fully sedated. If you're a veteran smoker, for example, you may get away with using this strain in measured doses in the afternoon to enjoy its relaxing, happy buzz as you finish off work or engage in some conversation. Then, as the night approaches and you indulge a little more, you'll likely find Garlic Breath to produce more relaxing physical effects that eventually leave you perfectly primed for a relaxing night's sleep. Users with a lighter tolerance, however, should reserve this strain for the evenings as it'll quickly leave them in a happy, hungry, and sleepy daze.

Uses of Garlic Breath

Garlic Breath is very popular among recreational cannabis smokers who enjoy this strain as they wind down towards the end of the day. Depending on your tolerance, you may want to couple this strain alongside leisurely activities, such as:

• Walking the dog
• Riding your bike around the neighborhood
• Yoga
• Creative activities, like art or music

Alternatively, you may prefer to enjoy Garlic Breath in the evening as you:

• Relax after work
• Unwind after a workout
• Watch movies and eat

Given its uplifting mental effects and relaxing body stone, it's no surprise that Garlic Breath is also very popular among medical cannabis patients. According to reports from MMJ patients, Garlic Breath may help relieve symptoms/ailments like:

• Stress
• Anxiety
• Depression
• Pain
• Inflammation
• GI issues
• Sleep problems
• Appetite loss
• Muscle soreness

User reports suggest that Garlic Breath is well-tolerated by a lot of people. However, as is the case with all high-potency cannabis strains, Garlic Breath may cause unwanted side effects in some people, including:

• Headaches
• Dry mouth/eyes

Cultivation and Production of Garlic Breath

Garlic Breath was made available as a limited-edition seed from ThugPug Genetics around 2016. Unfortunately, ThugPug hasn't re-released the strain in recent years. Based on reports from growers, the original strain was fairly easy to cultivate, considerably stretchy (some growers say that original Garlic Breath plants more than doubled in size during bloom), and ready to harvest after 9–11 weeks of flowering.

Other seed banks have tried to preserve Garlic Breath in seed form, including Premium Cultivars, which describes the strain as slightly indica dominant (60%) and reminiscent of Northern Lights in stature and growth. According to Premium Cultivars, Garlic Breath is a strong and vigorous plant that can be grown indoors and outdoors. Note, however, that outdoor plants may grow up to 200cm tall! After 9–10 weeks in bloom, Garlic Breath by Premium Cultivars can produce harvests of around 350g/m² indoors and up to 600g/plant outdoors.

Garlic Breath: A Beloved Cult Strain by ThugPug Genetics

Garlic Breath is a slightly indica-dominant cannabis hybrid originally bred by ThugPug Genetics from GMO and Mendo Breath. It is known for its stinky garlic aroma with citrus overtones, as well as its balanced high that relaxes the body while uplifting the mind. Experienced smokers enjoy this variety during the day/afternoon, but users with a lighter tolerance typically reserve it for evening use. Unfortunately, it seems that the original Garlic Breath by ThugPug Genetics is no longer available in seed form, but other seed banks have tried to preserve the strain, including Premium Cultivars.
