One of the things I frequently noticed reading other journals while learning about the process was that I often had questions that would have been answered if there was a lot of detail, so with this journal my goal was to log everything I do and keep track of all the relevant data every day. It was excessive, however, I enjoyed having all of that information and it made care decisions day to day much easier and was much less just doing what I felt was best. All of my care decisions were informed by a combination of data I logged, notes I took, and online reference materials to ensure my ideas were sound. With that in mind, my goals when starting this were as follows: 1) a grower who might find themselves in the position I was when I was starting can read a new growers thoughts, concerns, and actions day to day. 2) if the conditions are similar, this grow could be replicated by just following what’s within the journal. 3) if there are issues, there’s plenty of information available to narrow down the exact cause. 4) a high quality and respectable harvest for a person that is first time growing anything, and 5) to show that even if you don’t know anything about growing, like I did, you can do it too.
I believe I accomplished these goals. Regarding 1), now that I have some experience but am by no means close to being an expert, I can reference those early notes and reassure myself things are going well during my second grow. For 2), I am not running the same seeds so it’s hard to say for sure, but I know I am following and iterating on my strategies during this grow and things are going fairly well. On 3), I didn’t really have any issues. I believe this is because I so rigorously logged and thought carefully through my decisions. That said, there were things that made me uncomfortable but were for sure nothing major in retrospect; this gives me confidence in my methodologies, and should anything pop up on next grows, I know help will be easily found. Everywhere that helps troubleshoot cannabis problems requires much of the data I tracked, and the more you can provide the more likely you are to receive help figuring out a diagnosis and getting your plants back to good health. For 5), I like to think that I did demonstrate this clearly.
Elaborating on goal 4), I believe I did well from standards I read online and even if I didn’t, I was very happy with all aspects of my harvest which is ultimately likely the most important thing. Additionally, everyone who tried it has given great feedback, including some that said it was some of the best stuff they have had in a while without them knowing I had grown it. Here are some more details: I obtained 158.4 grams of dried buds that was jarred to cure. I used a 235W true draw (advertised as 1200W) cheap blurple, and a common metric for judging yield is grams of product produced per watt of light. I read to expect 0.5g to maybe less per watt with the type of light I had. 158.4g/235W=0.67g/W, which was about 33% more than the estimated 0.5g/W. Additionally, from 54.3g trim and bottom shelf buds, I produced 15.5g (28.5% yield) RSO. This came out to be about half as strong as what you can get at dispensaries around here, and I was pleasantly surprised at this. My region has outrageous dispensary prices, and my overall yield if bought at a dispensary equaled out to thousands of dollars in premium buds (70-80$ for 3.5g around here, lol) and hundreds of dollars of RSO (30-40$ for 0.5g). Even still, at black market prices this was a very worthwhile investment just on one grow and will pay for itself many times over in the future.
I strongly recommend new growers to 1) make sure you are getting good genetics in your seeds, 2) watch what you put in, watch what comes out, keep an eye on the environment, and track data relevant to these things (ie pH and ppm/EC going in, daily temperature and humidity ranges). Use all this when evaluating your plants. The plants will tell you when something is wrong, and if you keep track and do all this and have issues, you will likely be able to fix things yourself or with some outside help if it comes to it. I’d wager that if you do these things and the plants still turn out poorly, you have poor genetics in all seeds or that particular seed is just a poor individual. Another thing I would tell my beginning self is to not be worried about things beyond your control. For example, I checked them every few hours as seedlings and fretted over them. Me worrying and doing that did nothing to help the plants grow, and could make things worse if you act preemptively out of misplaced concern.
Finally, I think cannabis growing seems like many other things where you get out what you put in, even if you have 0 natural abilities. I took time basically every day to tend to my plants to take notes and gather data. I spent a long time before starting reading about and researching the process. I didn’t have the best equipment and passed up fairly easy techniques that would have increased my yields just to keep things simple for the first go, and I still am happy with the results. I hope you find something of value from this journal, and I am also logging my next grow at https://growithjane.com/growlog/skyler-njzf/. I invite you to join me there if you like, I will keep an eye periodically on the comments over there if any should pop up, and if you reference this grow I will attempt to respond. Happy growing!
